Portland Museum hosted Portland Preservation Alliance's First Annual Preservation Awards ceremony on May 16th, 2007 from 5:00 to 6:30pm. Ms. Donna Neary, Kentucky’s new State Historic Preservation Officer and Executive Director of the Kentucky Heritage Council presented awards to Debra Mercer and to the U.S. Marine Hospital.
PPA selected Ms. Mercer for the Individual Award for Excellence in Preserving Portland’s Heritage to recognize her outstanding work as leader of the Portland Planning Task Force. Mercer was appointed by Mayor Abramson in 2004 to lead a community effort to create a new Portland plan. Good planning is essential for historic preservation and Mercer’s efforts over a three-year period have resulted in a visionary and solid plan for Portland’s future. (See page 3 for the plan’s Preservation chapter.) The plan will be released later this spring. |
