GET SMART

about history at the Portland Museum

We realize it’s hard to teach children about history. Nineteenth century topics often make for much squirming, pinching and hair pulling. But, we also know, as you do, that history is filled with fascinating journeys through yesterday, important insights into today, and perhaps most importantly, valuable lessons for tomorrow.

Portland Museum makes teaching history easy, and even fun. As the story of the Falls of the Ohio unfolds through exhibits, films, games, readers and classroom materials, children “get smart” about where their town has been and where it’s going. And, for an educator, what could be smarter than that?

Bring this year’s class to see the places, hear the people, and experience the events that make the history of 19th century river towns like Portland so rich and fascinating. Admission is $4.00 per child with one free adult for every 10 children. Free admission for teachers who want to preview the Portland Museum tour before arranging a field trip.

We also offer educational materials, games and walking tours of the historic neighborhood to enrich your field trip experience. Portland Museum’s education program works well with all ages but especially fits First through Fifth grade and 8th grade curriculum.
